Our last stop in Amritsar was a visit to the Jallainwala Bagh, the site of a particularly brutal murder of a large gathering of unarmed civilians by the British. The massacre is these days seen as an early part of the civil unrest which led to Indian independence from Britain.
The park is large, walled on most sides, with a small opening through which soldiers entered and fired on the people gathered within: there was no way for them to escape. Nowadays it is peaceful and mournful; bullet marks are still clearly visible in many of the brick walls. The most creepy thing, however, are the life size topiary soldiers taking up positions to fire on the crowd.
